Getting Started with Mathematica
The purpose of this manual is to help you begin using Mathematica, a mathematical exploration
system in which you can perform calculations, evaluate functions, create graphics,
and develop programs. The manual contains simple examples for you to try. It covers just
the basics, enough to get you started.

Mathematica Course
We’re not attempting an exhaustive survey of Mathematica’s capabilities: we couldn’t come close to doing
justice to that task in the time we have. Equally, there are dozens of specialised uses for Mathematica (in
pure and applied mathematics, physical science, engineering etc.) that we can’t hope to address here (though
some are touched on in our “Case Studies”: see below).

Mathematica Tutorial
Many of the exercise sets in Thomas’ Calculus, Tenth Edition and Thomas’ Calculus, Early Transcendentals, Tenth Edition
contain Computer Algebra System (CAS) exercises, grouped in special sections labeled “Computer Explorations”, which can be
solved using Mathematica. In addition to the CAS exercises, the Thomas’ Calculus CD-ROM and Web Site contain a collection
of 38 Mathematica modules designed to help students develop a geometric intuition and deeper understanding and appreciation
of calculus concepts, methodologies, and applications.
